Despite his association with some of the most biting lyrics ever written in the 80s, and his fine run as a solo rock artist (not to mention his day job in the Eagles), Don Henley is back with his first solo album in 15 years, called Cass County.
And like Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler, Henley is embracing his country roots – or just swapping genres to a less fickle audience. Either way, Henley announced the record with a trailer and two new cuts: “That Old Flame,” featuring Martina McBride, and “Take A Picture Of This.” Both songs were co-written by producer Stan Lynch.
It’s good to hear that Henley can toss aside the sentimentality for some acerbic lyrical shade.
Side note: in another life, “That Old Flame” could have been an aching ballad with Stevie Nicks, and maybe it should have been.
Cass County features an all-star list of collaborators, including Merle Haggard, Alison Krauss, Vince Gill, Dolly Parton and Mick Jagger. The album is set for a September 25 release via Capitol Records and can be pre-ordered via iTunes.
…and for old times’ sake…
