DJ Mike Lidskin spent ten years at a National Public Radio station in Chicago, returned to California in 1997 and created Twirl Radio, and now hosts 30 hours of programming a month at Woody Radio. His two shows, “The Show With No Name” and “The Saturday Thing”, feature the finest independent music and artists from the rock era. Mike’s on a mission to not “just spin rock music, but to educate listeners about this vital art form.” Indeed, he doesn’t just announce the songs, but gives histories about some of the artists, the albums, and the songs themselves.
You can catch the DJ Mike Shows live on Tuesday nights at 8:00 p.m. PST and Saturdays at 10:00 a.m. PST at Woody Radio, http://www.woodyradio.com.

THIS WEEK’S THEME:
We’ve been cranking so hard here at Woody Radio that I hadn’t even stopped to notice that this was my 150th episode on Woody Radio. That’s a nice, big round number, and I’m very proud that the management hasn’t figured out what a complete fraud I am. They think I’m hard at work, creating 30 hours of radio programming each month.
But in reality, this is a whole lot easier than it looks. I just make it look hard. Honestly, if you came over to my house on a Tuesday night or a Saturday morning, chances are I would play a bunch of music for you, and try to impress you with the latest and greatest discoveries in my collection. So really, I’m not doing anything special–it’s just that I’m broadcasting it. I’m a total fake, I tell ya!
However–something interesting came up on this episode, and I think it’s going to stick. You know how on classic rock radio, there are pairs of songs by artists, which MUST be played in order, any time they are played on radio? Some prime examples are Led Zeppelin’s “Heartbreaker” and “Living Loving Maid (She’s Just a Woman)”, and Queen’s “We Will Rock You” and “We Are The Champions”. I have never heard only one of those songs on the radio by itself. Always in pairs. It’s as if the station will get fined if they don’t do it that way.
So thanks to the great Rachel Taylor Brown (who we’ve occasionally dubbed “The Notorious RTB”), the DJ Mike on Woody Radio shows now have a new rock radio rule. There are two songs on Rachel’s “Run Tiny Human” album, “Portland” and “Maker”, which are thematically connected, and appear one after the other on the record. The new rock radio rule is as follows: Henceforth, “Portland” and “Maker” shall always be played together, in order.
I’m pretty sure that’s how the Led Zeppelin and Queen rules are worded. If you find anything to the contrary, let me know. But for now, we’re gonna go with this.
A whole lot of great music was played on this, my 150th Woody Radio show. I know, 150 is kind of like a half birthday. But still, it doesn’t mean you can’t party. Enjoy!
