DJ Mike Lidskin spent ten years at a National Public Radio station in Chicago, returned to California in 1997 and created Twirl Radio, and now hosts 30 hours of programming a month at Woody Radio. His two shows, “The Show With No Name” and “The Saturday Thing”, feature the finest independent music and artists from the rock era. Mike’s on a mission to not “just spin rock music, but to educate listeners about this vital art form.” Indeed, he doesn’t just announce the songs, but gives histories about some of the artists, the albums, and the songs themselves.

On this day after Christmas, Boxing Day show, I struggled mightily to figure out if I was celebrating it correctly. I didn’t want to punch anybody, or more importantly, be on the receiving end of anybody’s punch. And I think I’ve successfully recycled all my boxes. So what to do?
Well, the holiday bubble continues, and no finer way than to celebrate by chatting with inventive drummer Andrew Toy, and then providing the world debut of a long-anticipated new track from brilliant Chicago band The Handcuffs!
Andrew Toy, Drummer. Says it right there on his website. Andrew is a much in-demand percussionist, based out of the Washington, D.C. area. He’s worked with Lisa Said, a longtime favorite on my radio shows, as well as with many others. He’s even traveled the world, playing music on cruise ships. So when 2020 struck, with all of its lockdown issues, he decided it was time to work on his own solo album, “Guardrails”. He created a batch of songs that are all instrumental, percussion-driven pieces. But they’re not drum solos. They are sonic landscapes, with melodies and rhythms, and varying textures. Incredibly cool, and Andrew takes the art of percussion to a place I’ve never been before. As we learn in the conversation, the place he’s taking you to has no guardrails. The Handcuffs are a great band from Chicago, and I’ve been following them for over a decade now, jumping on their train fairly early on. Their dynamic brand of rock and roll, both on record and on stage, always grabs you. However–the world’s been waiting patiently for some new music from them. It’s been a while since their third and most recent album. The band is well aware of the pent-up demand for some new Handcuffs music, so vocalist/multiinstrumentalist Chloe F. Orwell and drummer Brad Elvis assembled bassist Emily Togni, keyboardist Alison Hinderliter, and guitarist Jeffrey Kmieciak. Their fourth album is nearly complete, and there is some good news for us. The first single, “Love Me While You Can”, got its world radio debut spin on this show, right here on Woody Radio! If you’re looking for a two word review of this song, I’d offer up the following: “instant classic”. It hints at classic rock–maybe where the best of glam meets the best of blues rock–but remaining alternative AF.
