DJ Mike Show #194 – 2/27/2021: Interviews with Vitus Mataré and John Rosewall of Petrified Max, and Arrica Rose!

DJ Mike Lidskin spent ten years at a National Public Radio station in Chicago, returned to California in 1997 and created Twirl Radio, and now hosts 30 hours of programming a month at Woody Radio. His two shows, “The Show With No Name” and “The Saturday Thing”, feature the finest independent music and artists from the rock era. Mike’s on a mission to not “just spin rock music, but to educate listeners about this vital art form.” Indeed, he doesn’t just announce the songs, but gives histories about some of the artists, the albums, and the songs themselves.

You can catch the DJ Mike Shows live on Tuesday nights at 8:00 p.m. PST and Saturdays at 10:00 a.m. PST at Woody Radio, http://www.woodyradio.com.

THIS WEEK’S GUESTS:
Another fun show this past weekend–an interview doubleheader, and a treasure trove of more brand new 2021 music. It just gets better and better.

First up–the uber-prolific men of Petrified Max: Vitus Mataré and John Rosewall, return to the show with a new album, “Year Gone By”. But wait–isn’t that a bit misleading? Didn’t I recently have just John on the show, and not Vitus, to talk about their previous album?

Well, okay, yeah. It was November 14, which was not that long ago. And I got to talk to John only, as Vitus was beleaguered by technical issues that day. So on this show, I thought it would be a good chance for Vitus to set the record straight, as he wasn’t here to defend himself last time!

Ok, not really–they were both here to talk about the making of their wonderful new record. It was clear that they both really respect each other, and enjoy making music together. And this album builds on the promise of the first one, “Charlie Drove North”. It’s rocking and quirky, two of my favorite things in music. There’s odd tales to tell, sometimes set against a bleak landscape. This one is really great. We’ll learn about the collaboration process between Vitus, John, and legendary drummer Danny Frankel, the history of the band, and the making of this record. I think you’re going to want the album. Next up, L.A.- and Oakland-based singer-songwriter Arrica Rose returns to the show. Well, sort of. I’m going to find myself saying this a lot, but she’d been on my old Twirl Radio show a couple of times in the past, so this marks her Woody Radio interview debut. She’s got a nice new EP out, “Technicolour Blue”, with her band, Arrica Rose & the …’s (dot dot dots), and it’s just lovely. 6 songs, each one of them “like its own little movie”, as she puts it. Cinematic in scope, it’s her wonderful vocals, front and center, that capture your attention first. How about the sound? Dream pop meets americana, with some bursts of rock and roll. It’s the right mix to play to Arrica’s songwriting and vocal strengths. Hey, anybody who counts David Bowie, Tom Waits, Joy Division, and The Andrews Sisters among their musical influences has got my attention. She certainly knows how to put a good record together. You’ll need this to go with your coffee and a good book. More info: https://arricarose.com/

Enjoy the show!
