Front Row: Devo

Front Row: Devo

This time around we go all the way back to August, 1980 to catch a live performance of Devo at the Phoenix Theatre in Petaluma California for their Freedom of Choice tour.

Shot with three cameras by Joe Rees and his Target Video crew, this footage intimately captures the early essence of Devo prior to MTV.

Bandmate Gerald Casale said of this video of the concert:

“This lone artifact offers indisputable evidence that in 1980 Devo had reached a turning point. We were no longer just art monsters, we were mainstream performers too.”

The performance has Devo classics including:

“Whip It”
“Girl U Want”
“Secret Agent Man”
“Jocko Homo”
“Freedom of Choice”

Bonus educational content: This concert is also for newer fans who only know “Uncontrollable Urge” as the theme to Rob Dyrdek’s  “Ridiculousness” on MTV.
