Twirl Radio #790 – Lisa Said and Hannah Judson

After ten years at a National Public Radio station in Chicago, Mike Lidskin returned to California in 1997 and created Twirl Radio, a weekly two hour radio program which features the finest independent music and artists from the rock era. Mike’s on a mission to not “just spin rock music, but to educate listeners about this vital art form.” Indeed, he doesn’t just announce the songs, but gives histories about some of the artists, the albums, and the songs themselves.

You can catch Twirl live each Saturday afternoon, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM PST on Sacramento’s Voice, KUBU 96.5 FM, and archived right here, as well as at If you haven’t headed into your Saturday night with an earful of Twirl, you’re doing it wrong!

On today’s show, we were treated to a doubleheader: an interview with singer-songwriter Lisa Said, and a live, in-studio performance an interview with singer-songwriter Hannah Judson.

Lisa Said recently released an EP entitled Estranged. It’s a tight little song cycle–four well-written songs, crafted from personal experience. “Some Dudes”, the opener, is both hilarious and world wise. Think of it as a response to the Rolling Stones’ “Some Girls”, and you’ve got the picture. We chatted with Lisa from her home in Washington, D.C., and learned about what went into the making of Estranged, and what’s coming up next on the horizon for her. More info at

Right after that conversation, Hannah Judson came into the Sacramento studio, accompanied by none other than Twirl Radio favorite Pepe Espada, who “discovered” her for our audience! We chatted about her wide-ranging musical influences, which range from classical to folk to punk. And best of all–she performed two songs for us live in-studio, with her beautiful Gretsch guitar and this cool loop pedal, which gave her the ability to create her own backing vocals on the fly. You’ll simply have to hear it to believe it. More info at
