DJ Mike Show #155 – 10/10/2020: Leslie Pereira & The Lazy Heroes interview

DJ Mike Lidskin spent ten years at a National Public Radio station in Chicago, returned to California in 1997 and created Twirl Radio, and now hosts 30 hours of programming a month at Woody Radio. His two shows, “The Show With No Name” and “The Saturday Thing”, feature the finest independent music and artists from the rock era. Mike’s on a mission to not “just spin rock music, but to educate listeners about this vital art form.” Indeed, he doesn’t just announce the songs, but gives histories about some of the artists, the albums, and the songs themselves.

You can catch the DJ Mike Shows live on Tuesday nights at 8:00 p.m. PST and Saturdays at 10:00 a.m. PST at Woody Radio, http://www.woodyradio.com.

THIS WEEK’S GUESTS:
This show was a real treat for me. (Actually, they all are–hey, I get to do radio!) How often do you get to chat with a band, on the air, on the actual date that they release a new record? Well, that’s exactly what happened. Leslie Pereira & The Lazy Heroes–all four of them–were on my show on October 10th, the date that their wonderful “Good Karma” album was released on Big Stir Records.

Despite the band name “The Lazy Heroes”, their music is anything but. Bouncy and steeped in the energy of punk, but gloriously upbeat, Good Karma is a rockin’, fun listen. Leslie is the principal songwriter, vocalist, and guitarist, Paula Venise on percussion and vocals, Jeff Page on drums (and additional songwriting and vocals), and Rob Lontok on bass. Jeff and Rob are a well-established rhythm section, playing session work all over the greater Los Angeles area. The legendary Karen Basset (our Woody Radio Artist of the Year for 2019) recorded and produced it, and lent a sympathetic ear, helping the band be the best version of themselves.

One trait that really stands out with Leslie Pereira & The Lazy Heroes: the folks in this band genuinely like each other, and enjoy making music together. They’re all really nice, kind people, and their easy camaraderie is what makes them a band. Our conversation was super fun and lively. We talked a little about live performance, as they are known as a force to be reckoned with on the L.A. scene, and if there’s one thing they miss right now, it’s playing live shows. Now I really want to go see a live show–a Leslie Pereira & The Lazy Heroes show! All in good time. For more information: https://bigstirrecords.com/leslie-pereira-the-lazy-heroes
