DJ Mike Lidskin spent ten years at a National Public Radio station in Chicago, returned to California in 1997 and created Twirl Radio, and now hosts 30 hours of programming a month at Woody Radio. His two shows, “The Show With No Name” and “The Saturday Thing”, feature the finest independent music and artists from the rock era. Mike’s on a mission to not “just spin rock music, but to educate listeners about this vital art form.” Indeed, he doesn’t just announce the songs, but gives histories about some of the artists, the albums, and the songs themselves.
You can catch the DJ Mike Shows live on Tuesday nights at 8:00 p.m. PST and Saturdays at 10:00 a.m. PST at Woody Radio, http://www.woodyradio.com.

THIS WEEK’S GUEST:
New Year, new me. Well, only half of that is true. Sorry, folks, you’re stuck with the same old me. But my first radio show of 2021 came on the second day of the year, and I was still in the happy, comfortable holiday bubble. But I thought it would be cool to start off the year with a bang, and well, this show just might have done it.
My very first artist interview of 2021 was with none other than Jody Porter, the guitarist from Fountains of Wayne, who’s got some excellent solo albums in his catalog. And the one he just released, “Waterways”, is amazing. You don’t want to go through 2021 without it.
This one was all recorded and ready to go before the pandemic hit. It was a couple of years in the making–started off in England, then Jody took the tracks home and finished it off. His hand picked, rotating band of collaborators are called The Berlin Waltz. He worked with FOW’s drummer, Brian Young, who gets co-producer credits, after Jody discovered that he had some great mixing skills. Jody got to experience life on both sides of the glass–this was his first shot at engineering a record–and it yielded big results.
Waterways has a nautical theme, and as Jody put it, it’s loosely about “being landlocked at sea”. Jody actually did spend a lot of time on the water in his younger years, sailing and having grown up near the ocean. There are some moody sounds and song titles that reflect that. But the majority of the songs rock, and show off his blistering guitar work and thoughtful lyrics. He jokingly coined the genre “psychedelic yacht rock”.
Jody and I had a wide-ranging conversation. Sure, we dug deep into the making of Waterways, but you’ll hear fun diversions into such topics as seagulls with accents and the famed daredevil Evil Knievel. Give a listen. But more importantly, get yourself a copy of the album. It’s out now on Rare Rock Records. https://jodyporter1.bandcamp.com/
Enjoy the show!
